Inspired by the book Pete the Cat and His Four Groovy Buttons, I recently posted a freebie book at TPT and TEACHERS NOTEBOOK, to help my students as they learn to read, write and count numbers. I found my students to have trouble easing into the TEEN numbers so when I designed the book, I removed the pages with numbers 1 and 4. This also helped maintain the formatting of the Easy to Assemble books. If you're not familiar with the format, the books print out READY to go to the copy machine, copy and fold. There's no need to shuffle papers or make excessive folds. I know from my own teaching how much time all of that takes. Especially when making books for two sessions of Kindergartners.
So to try and accommodate requests for numbers 1-10 AND provide support for students as the move into learning to work with the teen numbers ( 11 & 12), I combined all of the BUTTONS BUTTONS books in my files into a COMBO pack. I hope this helps ;-)
Please head over to my TPT or TEACHERS NOTEBOOK shops to get your updated copy….by the way….yes, its FREE! ;-)
Hi,
I was looking for a quick Math Center activity with a "Holiday Flavor". I created a packet that helps students as they begin measuring (non-standard units). The options include a book, which can be copied and given to each student. Or a set of "gifts" that can be printed. laminated and placed in a Math Center. There is a recording sheet to place in the center for students to keep track of their results. I recommend using pennies for measuring, but any small unit of measure can be used (small buttons, beans, flat beads, etc. Please note while the formats look different, the ribbons in the book and on the center cards are almost identical in size. However, I'm not so sure the students would necessarily notice. You choose the way you want your students to practice measuring, or your could even use BOTH.
In all there are 13 gifts with ribbons to measure.
I created a set of books to use with them as we learn color, number and basic sight words. There are 3 levels of books to help differentiate for your students. The first book has all the words printed. The second book has a fill in the blank for the color word. And the third type of book has blanks for the number and color words. The students count and color according to the text. The books are designed to go from your printer to copy machine without shuffling or folding pages to make the books. Simple copy, fold and staple and you're ready to put the books out for students to use.

We are working hard to determine the number of syllables in common words around the classroom. Maybe your students are working on this skill too...if so, why not download this freebie for them to try? My students love to grab a clipboard and go around the room searching for 1,2,3 or 4 syllable words. This packet has a Fall into Winter type theme. There are pages to help students find 1,2 syllable words as well as 1,2,3 or 2,3 or 2,3,4 syllable words. I really like to create materials that allow for differentiated learning. If some of your students are not quite catching on to syllables, give them the lower numbers, if your students are clapping along just fine, then challenge them with the higher syllable counts.
Either way, they should have a lot of fun. You can head over to my shops at TPT or Teachers Notebook to get your free set of Syllable Count Write the Room packet.
We're working hard in Kindergarten on learning about RHYMING WORDS! It's a slow process. ;-)
I decided to make a little book to help my Kiddos on this journey. I thought you might need something to boost your Kiddos too! This book has a repeating text "What rhymes with _____?". The pictures are crisp and easy to identify. Each page has a picture imbedded and a matching picture to cut out of the word bank and add to the corresponding page in the book. For example, there is a page of a boat, with a space on the page to glue in a picture of a goat. There are 10 sets of rhyming words. (boat/goat, snake/cake, pen/hen, box/fox, bug/rug, mouse/house, duck/truck, bear/chair, car/star, and wagon/dragon) The book design is intended to be SUPER simple. You'll print it out from your computer, take the pages just as they come out of the printer to your copy machine and set it for 1-sided to 2 sided, copy, fold, staple and go. If your printer does 2-sided pages, then you can print books straight from your printer.
A nice book to add to their emergent reader library!
Would love to hear what you think about this little ditty!
Oh and yes....it's Common Core! (RF.K.2a, RF.K4)

This year I am finding I need to spend a great deal of time working with my students on fine motor development. It feels like each year this skill needs to be worked on more than the previous year. In the meantime the Standards are waiting to be taught along with all the other things we work on in our 2 1/2 hours together. I tried to think of ways to develop fine motor skills while working on the standards at the same time.....no, that's not what's making me punchy...;-) But I am fusing the skills together with my PUNCH IT packets. With the Counting pack the kids work on Number Recognition (1-20) and counting objects !:1. The kids cut out the number card. they read the number then use a one hole punch to count out the numbers. What fun right?
The Letter Sounds pack helps with fine motor again with punching! They cut out the picture, say the name then punch the corresponding letter to match. Then glue the pictures into a booklet in ABC order. There are two booklets, one with the letters lightly printed to scaffold those students that need a little boost. There are blank pages to challenge your more capable students.
Then there's the Syllables pack. There are two booklets in this packet. Each has 22 pictures for students to say the word, clap/count the syllables then punch the numeral that matches the number of syllables.
All the packets are great for Center Work and for Homeschoolers as well.
If you're looking for a multi skill builder...then these packs are going to give your centers a powerful PUNCH!!
Before you sigh the BIG sigh....I know....it seems school just ended and many of us are already facing Back to School. The local sales papers are quickly filling with school supplies and clothing. I wanted to share with you a few items teachers should have on their personal back to school list. The first is DROP BOX! If you are constantly downloading files to a jump drive and carrying it between school and home, then DROP BOX is a great solution to issues associated with leaving the jump drive at school, or spilling coffee on it, or pulling your hair out because you can't find the jump drive ANYWHERE! DROP BOX is a FREE online storage site. You can store everything from files, to PowerPoint presentations, photos videos ...anything that you can put on a jump drive, you can store at DROP BOX. You place your files in your DROP BOX at home....make your way to school and the files are there. Open the files at school, edit, print, save and when you get home, the file will be waiting there with all the new revisions in tact. Your files are available from any device that has an Internet connection. Beyond you having access to your files, you can share files with friends and colleagues. You can share ONE file or an entire folder of files. Your friends can only see the files you share, the rest of your files are private. Another item to add to your list is REMIND 101. How would you like to be able to send a TEXT message to remind your students/parents about important information or events in your class?
I know, you may worry about students/parents returning text messages or calling your personal cell phone. Well, with REMIND 101, you never have to be concerned about exposing your number. Once you open an account at REMIND 101 you'll be given instructions for setting up a class (or up to 10 classes). REMIND 101 generates a specific sign up code that you pass along to your students/parents. They will use their cell phone/email to sign up to receive your messages. You don't see their cell number/email address and they don't see yours. The messages are one way...parents can't respond/reply....they can only receive messages.
When you have a message to send, simply login (via the Internet or the Remind 101 app). Select the class you want to receive your reminders, press send and the message goes out immediately, or you can schedule it to go out on the day/time you specify.
I LOVED using this with my students/parents. I used this app to remind parents about Picture Day, Library Day, Gym Day.....Snow Day....and many other classroom related reminders. It's a FREE service that you'll turn to over and over again! Click on the phone image to open your account today. I plan to hand out this info to parents at our Curriculum Night.

Remind 101

One more item for your list is an app to help you level and keep track of the books in your classroom. BOOK RETRIEVER is available in iTunes and costs .99! You get sooooo much for your money....
This is the Classroom Library Company's app for managing book borrowing between teachers, parents and students. It allows you to scan, level and inventory your entire classroom library, giving you leveling data such as Guided Reading Levels, Lexile, Accelerated Reader, Reading Counts, DRA and Reading Recovery. There is a label printing function that allows your to print the leveling data wirelessly and easily attach the labels to your books! Over 178,000 titles are loaded and they're adding more every day. You can enter student's names into the app. When a student borrows a book from your classroom library, scan it and the app keeps track of who has which book. When the student returns the book scan it again and the app checks the book back into your library. You can search the app for titles in your library. There's even a book within the app called The Classroom Library Book: Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Building, Organizing, and Using a Classroom Library!
OK....so what are you waiting for? Click on the photo-link below to purchase and download the app to your device.

Digital Card Readers from Cindy Blakely on Vimeo.

Are you one of those people that takes plenty of photos with your digital camera, smartphone or tablet? Do you struggle to figure out how to get the photos OUT of the camera and into your computer? Do you have the camera cord in drawer or box, but it has now intertwined itself in a tight-knit-never-to-be-untangled-without-you-screaming-a-few-CHOICE-words type of ball with all the other cords from previous devices?
Feeling like you need a degree in "Digital Forensics" to match the proper cord with the proper device?

Enter the world of Digital Card Readers! No, this isn't something that's spankin' brand new. They've been around for several years. But I meet folks all the time who have never heard of this little device and wondered how they got left holding the ball of cords and missed out on this great little secret.

Well, let me tell you, the Digital Card Reader has saved me time and headaches. You can pick them up just about anywhere. I found the best price to be at WalMart or Target. The office supply stores carry them, but at a premium price (in my opinion). For less than $10 you can say goodbye to trying to find the right cord, hook everything up and finally transfer the pictures. With a card reader, you simply remove the card from the device, insert it into the reader and put the reader into the USB port of your computer. No cords, no tangles, no mess. I love that I can keep it in my purse and carry it back and forth between home and school. Or because the price is right, leave one at school and have one at home. If you don't own one already add it to your Back To School shopping list! You won't be sorry you did.
A few shopping tips....
If you have multiple devices with different sized memory cards; there are readers that can hold more than one type/size of card.
If your USB ports sit right next to each other on your computer AND you are using one port on a regular basis (in my case I've run out of space on my hard drive and am storing everything else on an external hard drive that uses one of my ports)...Then be sure to look for a "slimline" type of USB connection. The readers come in all sizes...and I'm sure a few fun colors too. Google it! or Bing it! either way you're sure to find one (or two) to fit your needs!
Oh, one more tip...should you go shopping and ask for them....the clerks at the store are not always GEEKS...sometimes they don't know they even sell them. The Digital Card Readers are often shelved near the digital memory cards. I know....but you'd be surprised at how many store clerks sent me in the wrong direction.

I hope this helps! If you have any questions about Digital Card Readers, I'm happy to help you out. Or if you already have one, I would love to hear from you. I'm sure others would find it helpful to hear your experiences too.
OK....so I checked online before posting this and as of RIGHT NOW...TODAY....Walmart is selling various card readers for as little as $3.82!!! I KNOW!!! (They were higher than that in the store!)
And get this....order online and PICK IT UP AT THE WALMART NEAR YOU!! How much easier can it get? ;-) Quick....before the prices change....click on the image below to go the the Walmart site.
(Come back and let me know what you got!) ;-)
I'm not really sure why... perhaps because it was an extremely busy school year, coupled with a serious and very scary eye surgery...toss in a bit of Common Core, and scoop of RtI and it all adds up to having to set some things aside for a while.
Take some time to regroup!
I was content to wait until school started up again before returning to blogging....but I recently met up with my BBB (Best Blog Buddy) Fran of Kindergarten Crayons . She was in Chicago over the weekend for a convention and I wasn't about to pass on the opportunity to meet her face to face! It's always interesting when something like that happens... the person is shorter or taller than you imagined, or the voice is different.... I'm sure I'm MUCH taller than she expected...but the connection was just PERFECT! ;-)
We had a lovely dinner and HOURS of FANTASTIC conversation! (Our poor waitress must have thought we were NEVER going to leave.LOL!!)
We traded lots of stories about kids, teachers, principals, families and more. We talked about developing children, Common Core, and blogging! Fran gave me a GREAT pep talk! It was JUST what I needed to be (re)motivated to get up and start blogging again. Fran is even nicer, more knowledgeable and fun that I imagined she would be. Thanks again Fran....I really needed that!
You are PRICELESS!
Having shared all that, be sure to check back here later for some great ideas to get you going in the coming school year!
AND have time to share it with other teachers online.
In class we have been working on learning a host of sight words. We have been working on reading and writing our words in sentences. Sometimes my kiddos have a hard time making up sentences so I wanted to create something to help them out a bit. My ROLL, WRITE, READ, DRAW packet is designed to provide practice, variety and fun.
To prepare for your kiddos... Choose the sheet(s) for students to work with.
Provide materials for writing and drawing and a dice (1-6)

Each
sheet has a focus sight word. Many sheets build upon various sight words, so be
sure you expose students to the words to ensure success. Oh and yes, they are Common Core aligned. (CCSS are printed on each page)

Directions: Students roll the dice, match the
number on the dice with a word in the word bank at the top of the page. The
student fills in the blank in the sentence with the word from the word bank.
Then the student draws a picture to match the completed sentence.

Sight
Words: a,
the, and, big, little, my, is, here, blue, red, see, it, one, yellow, can, in,
make

This is a GREAT activity for your independent literacy/word work centers. Students can work side by side on the same sheet and create their own sentences and illustrations. You can also differentiate by assigning the more complex sentences to your stronger readers and writers.
Try this "Halloween Tic-Tac-Toe". There are several ways to play....as they win, the kids can collect "candy" and count how many times they won. OR use the "graphing score card" and the first player to the top is the winner. Or for those who can use Tally Marks, score can be recorded with tally marks and students count the score, then add up how many games were won in all. If your students are equally matched at Tic-Tac-Toe, a fun way to play is PLAY TO LOSE! This requires a different way of thinking...the first player to GET 3 in a row is the loser and the other player gets the point. That would be interesting to watch! ;-)
I hope you can use this and your kiddos have fun!
I use them to decorate the classroom, share poems and chants with the students in a LARGE version, and now I use posters in some of my Centers to help scaffold learning for some of my Kiddos! Once upon a time I created them all in PrintMaster, but as the versions changed, it seemed to drop the option to make POSTERS. I recently discovered I can make both POSTERS and MINI POCKET CHART images for classroom centers. This week I used the poster to help with a label the pumpkin sheet from my LABEL THE PARTS packet. I am also using mini versions of the theme related words in my BIG pocket chart at my word work center. Watch this video to learn how you can turn any PDF image into a poster or mini pocket chart images....
My first thought was "Yeah Right!! Someone's giving ME something for FREE?", but I took a chance. BOY...Am I glad I did!! The email was from a company called MyBinding.Com. and they were reaching out to teachers who may need supplies in their classroom (that's ME!!). In a few days the laminator arrived. Now, I must admit, I've heard (read) teachers rave about a desktop laminator on their blogs before and always thought it might be nice. But actually HAVING ONE is a totally different matter. I LOVE THIS THING!!!!!!! We have the big laminator at school, but you have to get the key, heat it up and the end product is flimsy unless you use cardstock. The desktop laminator is a DREAM! It laminates regular copy paper with the THICK finish that truly makes the games and activities DURABLE! If you haven't tried one, may I say you won't believe how nice the finish products will turn out? I have used it so many times in such a short period of time that it makes me wonder how I managed to teach so long without one. Who knew???
Take a look at my first laminating project.
Thanks so much for checking out my Label The Parts packet. This set has a FALL THEME and contains two versions of labeling for your students. The first is a cut and glue the label. The second makes use of “letter boxes” for students to write in the letters to label the parts. Each page has the words needed printed right on the page.

The two versions allows the teacher to pair the student skill levels with the pages.

Students label the parts and then color the sheet.

These sheets can be a great addition to WORD WORK type centers..

I felt my math series went over it much too quickly for some of my kiddos, so I created this set of independent center activities to help some of my little ones as they learn. I figured I'm probably not the only one with kids who could benefit from more practice, so I am sharing this FREEBIE with anyone in need! ;-)
I've added the related Common Core Standards right on the master worksheet for easy reference as you plan your lessons.
Just click over to my Teachers Notebook Shop to download a copy for your kiddos. Maybe while you're there you can add my shop to your favorites and get notification when new items are added.
I hope you find this useful...
Last week we were in our BACK TO SCHOOL meetings....you know the ones I mean....the ones that are held in the 48 hours leading up to the start of school when you have a THOUSAND last minute preparations. Well, during a break we learned the District approved a brand-new teacher to ease the bulk of 33 students in each of our existing first grade classrooms. We cheered wildly!!!
Then we realized our "meeting room" was actually the yet-to-be-interviewed-and-hired teacher's classroom.
Without hesitation or a second thought, the teaching staff (and Student Teachers) started removing all the extra furniture, multiple computers, monitors, broken items and "junk" that was stored in that room and starting moving in desks and chairs. Teachers went to their classrooms and found boarders, bulletin board papers and decorations and within an hour turned the classroom that had slowly become a giant storage closet, into a BEAUTIFUL, Kid-Friendly, First Grade classroom ready for students to arrive on the first day of school!
I can't tell you how proud I was to see all of these teachers working so hard, for someone they had never met... during the last few hours of summer....with TONS left to do in their own classrooms.....
I STILL get goosebumps! I've worked at schools in the past where teachers would've heard the news and walked away shaking their heads wondering how the new teacher would EVER be ready on time. Not this group!! What amazing ladies! What a FABULOUS way to welcome a new teacher to our building!
The new teacher was hired a few hours later. She had tears in her eyes when she saw what we had done to help make her school-life a little less stressful....take a look at some of the photos....I would've taken more, but we were all busy getting things ready ;-)
This has been a rough summer for me... in June, I had to put my longtime, loyal friend Coal, my black lab down. Then in July, my dad passed away. It's taken a while for me to regroup. But I'm back now and ready to get caught up with other bloggers as well as share things here on my blog.
Based on my popular ABC Highlights game, I received a request for a new version of Sight Word Highlights. Melissa, a fellow Kindergarten teacher requested specific words in a specific order based on the MMH Treasures Reading series for Kindergarten. The list has the basic beginning reading sight words so even if you're not using the series, your students can still enjoy playing the game. The packet gradually introduces sight words on score cards/game boards leading up to the final game board with all of the words for game play.
I am looking forward to using them with my students. My plan is to add these books to my Literacy Stations as independent work. The text and pictures are perfect for beginning readers. The books have great graphics that are fun for kids to color. The books can also support English Language Learners as they build vocabulary.
There are 14 different titles in the ANYTIME MINI BOOKS packet. The titles are intended to be used along with other units being taught without distracting from the units' content. Titles are: Baseball, Vehicles, The Neighborhood, Insects, Fast Food, 911 Vehicles, Getting Around Town, Traveling Fast, Vegetables, Camping Out, Sea Life, Fruits, Football, and Out of This World.
You may notice some of the books have been designed to purposely grab the attention of BOYS who are beginning readers. (Sometimes we have to draw them in closer to reading). :-)
The books require only one sheet of paper and two folds to make. No need to staple, (unless of course you prefer to do so). The vision is that after modeling a few times, the papers can be placed in a Center/Station and students can fold them on their own. My goal is to put as many books in the hands of my students as possible.
The books can easily fit in student's reading bags or in your classroom pocket chart/book bins or classroom library.
