Syllable Count Freebie

We are working hard to determine the number of syllables in common words around the classroom. Maybe your students are working on this skill too...if so, why not download this freebie for them to try? My students love to grab a clipboard and go around the room searching for 1,2,3 or 4 syllable words. This packet has a Fall into Winter type theme. There are pages to help students find 1,2 syllable words as well as 1,2,3 or 2,3 or 2,3,4 syllable words. I really like to create materials that allow for differentiated learning. If some of your students are not quite catching on to syllables, give them the lower numbers, if your students are clapping along just fine, then challenge them with the higher syllable counts.

Rhyming Book Freebie

Hi,
We're working hard in Kindergarten on learning about RHYMING WORDS! It's a slow process. ;-)
I decided to make a little book to help my Kiddos on this journey. I thought you might need something to boost your Kiddos too! This book has a repeating text "What rhymes with _____?". The pictures are crisp and easy to identify.  Each page has a picture imbedded and a matching picture to cut out of the word bank and add to the corresponding page in the book. For example, there is a page of a boat, with a space on the page to glue in a picture of a goat. There are 10 sets of rhyming words. (boat/goat, snake/cake, pen/hen, box/fox, bug/rug, mouse/house, duck/truck, bear/chair, car/star, and wagon/dragon) The book design is intended to be SUPER simple. You'll print it out from your computer, take the pages just as they come out of the printer to your copy machine and set it for 1-sided to 2 sided, copy, fold, staple and go. If your printer does 2-sided pages, then you can print books straight from your printer.
A nice book to add to their emergent reader library!

A New Activity

Hi, It seems like forever since I've had time to sit down and work on a new fun activity for my students. AND have time to share it with other teachers online.
In class we have been working on learning a host of sight words. We have been working on reading and writing our words in sentences. Sometimes my kiddos have a hard time making up sentences so I wanted to create something to help them out a bit. My ROLL, WRITE, READ, DRAW packet is designed to provide practice, variety and fun.
To prepare for your kiddos... Choose the sheet(s) for students to work with. Provide materials for writing and drawing and a dice (1-6)

Each sheet has a focus sight word. Many sheets build upon various sight words, so be sure you expose students to the words to ensure success. Oh and yes, they are Common Core aligned. (CCSS are printed on each page)

Directions: Students roll the dice, match the number on the dice with a word in the word bank at the top of the page. The student fills in the blank in the sentence with the word from the word bank. Then the student draws a picture to match the completed sentence.

Sight Words: a, the, and, big, little, my, is, here, blue, red, see, it, one, yellow, can, in, make

This is a GREAT activity for your independent literacy/word work centers. Students can work side by side on the same sheet and create their own sentences and illustrations. You can also differentiate by assigning the more complex sentences to your stronger readers and writers.

President's Day Fun

We had President's Day off from school...but there's still time for this fun activity! I taught Lincoln last week and plan to teach Washington this week.  If you're in the same boat....you might find this President's Day Freebie fun to share with your class! Happy Blog Birthday (to me)

Today my teaching blog turns 1!! I can hardly believe it was a year ago that I started this blog. I can't begin to say how much I enjoy meeting and sharing with so many talented teachers. I appreciate all the support from my family and friends and people like Fran, Tamara and Leslie; as well as Debbie & Steve at Teachers Notebook and the many wonderful teachers at TBA and beyond! Thanks to all of you for all you do! Another HUGE THANKS to Pam at  The Posh Box for her talents and patience as we worked together on making the design of the blog fit just what I wanted! THANKS also to all the folks who take time out of their busy schedules to check in to my blog to see what's-what and share thoughts and comments!

All week I've been sharing Ocean-related freebies in celebration of the 1st anniversary of my teaching blog. (Sea Life is one of my FAVORITE units to teach, and I LOVE going to the beach, so the materials have all been related to that!)
This is a book for Emergent Readers. It contains simple sight words coupled with pictures to support the text. It's also one of my EZ-2 Assemble books which are designed to either print 2-sided from your computer's printer, or carried to your copy machine and printed 1-sided to 2-sided, folded, and stapled and it's ready to give to students. No need to shuffle pages around, just fold and go! It saves both time and papers. I hope your students enjoy the book.  And once more....THANKS for all your support!

Busy, Busy, Busy, BOX!

I know I've talked about Drop Box before, but sometimes a resource comes our way and we're not quite ready to use it, or have a need for it.
Now that we're all pretty much back at school, you may find yourself busy creating files to enhance your teaching. If you're like me, you could easily have files at home, school, and a few places in between. Drop Box is a GREAT resource that allows you to save and share your files on the Internet. You can access the files from any computer, or your iPad as long as you have an Internet connection. If you're working on a project on your own or working collaboratively, DROP BOX can help. Simply email your link and access to your files can be share with anyone you choose.
 We're just starting the school year, but I have found Drop Box to be EXTREMELY helpful. If you don't have an account there, you really should consider opening an account...it's FREE and you will save yourself time and energy by knowing where you stored your files! ;-)

If you find yourself searching through pages and pages of documents or websites looking for the right Common Core Standard to plug into your lesson plan book, there's an App for that....better yet...it's FREE!! Click on over to the Apple iTunes store to check it out. I have used it often and LOVE IT!! No need to carry extra papers around, just open your iPad, iPhone or iPod Touch and you literally have the standards at your fingertips!

SeaHorse Pattern Freebie

As part of theTBA Freebie Friday, I would like to share something from my Sea Life unit....
My Kindergartners are loving every minute of our Sea Life unit. We created a mural of the ocean for our classroom. As we learn facts about an animal, we have an art project to make the animal and add it to our mural. Sometimes the kids draw free-hand. Other times we draw together step-by-step. To make the Seahorse we traced patterns. Here are the directions a copy of the pattern we use plus a couple of samples to view.

My First Freebie

 I have really been inspired by the outstanding work I have seen from teachers at Teaching Blog Addict. I am a little nervous about sharing, but here I go...
 I am attempting my very first FREEBIE! This is a lesson for my Kindergartners to help with Non-Standard Measurement. It has a Sea Life/ Beach theme.I printed the pictures on card stock and laminated them.  Students can use a variety of small items  beans, Uni-Fix Cubes, small erasers, bottle caps, etc. as measuring tools. They just lay the measuring tool on the bold black line on each picture and record their findings on the recording sheet.
This is perfect for my Math Center!
If you are teaching in the classroom, or Home School, your Kids can have fun measuring.

I Love Fonts...

I really LOVE fonts! I really don't know what the attraction is, but for me, the more the merrier! ;-)
True story...years ago I went to load a new program on my computer and got an error message that I had too many fonts (about 750) and needed to remove at least 250 before the program could be loaded. LOL!!
I thought I would share with you some of the online places I like to go to find fonts. Maybe you are a FONT JUNKIE too! ;-)
